Most people don't think about the dumpster until the truck is pulling up the driveway. That's usually fine for a small container on a flat asphalt driveway. It's not fine for a 30-yard on a sloped pad with a low-hanging tree branch. A few minutes of prep before delivery day saves the driver a U-turn and saves you from a placement that doesn't actually work.
Here's the short list.
Walk the route the truck will take
The roll-off truck needs a clear, straight shot from the street to the spot where the dumpster will sit. Walk it the day before delivery and check for:
- Parked cars (yours, the neighbors', the contractors')
- Trash barrels at the curb
- Toys, hoses, garden equipment
- Anything someone tossed in the driveway "for now" that's been sitting for a week
The truck doesn't need a parade lane. It needs about ten feet of clear width to maneuver and an open path to the drop spot.
Check the overhead
This is the one most people forget. The truck arm goes up high when it sets the dumpster down. Tree branches, power lines, basketball hoops, eaves on detached garages, low-hanging porch roofs. All of these matter.
The truck arm goes up high to set the container down. If your spot has low branches, power lines, or other overhead obstacles, that's a problem. Prune the branch back the day before, or pick a different spot. Drivers won't risk hitting a power line.
Mark the spot
Tell us where you want the dumpster. The clearer the better. A spray-paint X on the driveway, a pair of orange cones, a piece of cardboard laid flat. Anything that gives the driver an obvious target.
If you're not going to be home for delivery, a quick photo texted to us with arrows works. The booking number 603-634-9947 takes texts too, and a photo with "right here, parallel to the garage" gets you the placement you actually want.
Think about the surface
Asphalt driveways handle a dumpster fine. The container has wheels at one end and a wooden plank at the other, and most asphalt holds up. Three things to think about.
Sealcoated driveways. Fresh sealcoat (within a month or two) can mark. If yours was just done, mention it on the call and we can talk through options.
Pavers or stamped concrete. These are pickier. We'll put boards under the wheels for paver and stamped surfaces. Just mention it on the booking call.
Lawn placement. Possible, but the dumpster will leave wheel ruts and yellow grass after a week sitting. Most people who try it end up wishing they'd kept it on the driveway.
Think about distance from the house
The dumpster wants to be close enough to walk to with full arms but far enough that loading doesn't drop debris on your siding or shrubs. A few feet off the side of the house works well. Close enough to walk to but not touching. Direct contact with the house is a bad idea: paint, gutters, splinter risk going in.
For larger sizes like the 20-yard, give the driver an extra few feet of buffer. The container is longer and the swing-back when it sets down is bigger.
Confirm pickup access too
Sometimes a driveway works great for delivery and gets blocked for pickup. The most common offender is cars parked across the foot of the driveway, or a project vehicle parked between the dumpster and the street. The driver needs the same clearance going out as coming in.
If pickup is tight, plan ahead. Move cars the night before. Tell other contractors on site that the truck is coming.
When the driveway just won't work
If your driveway genuinely doesn't have room or won't take the truck weight, call before you book. We can usually find something that works on the property, whether that's a different spot, a different size container, or a junk removal truck visit instead. Check our FAQ for the access details.
The booking call
Before your delivery goes on the calendar, the booking conversation usually covers the size you want, the drop date, a description of where the dumpster will sit, and any access concerns (overhead, slope, neighbors, gates).
