Hampstead and Plaistow sit next to each other in southern Rockingham County, both with a mix of older rural NH housing stock and newer subdivisions. They share enough characteristics that bundling them into one guide makes sense. Here's what to know if you're renting a dumpster in either town.
What they have in common
Hampstead and Plaistow share a few characteristics that affect dumpster work:
- Mixed housing stock (older colonials, mid-century, modern subdivisions)
- Wide range of lot sizes (some 1-acre suburban lots, some larger rural parcels)
- Town centers with older buildings around them
- Active road frontage along Route 121A (Hampstead) and Route 125 (Plaistow)
- Commuter populations heading to MA and to the Manchester area
Most of what we see in both towns is residential.
Hampstead specifics
Hampstead has a village-style center around Stage Road and Main Street with older homes, then opens into rural farmland and forest on the periphery. A few things specific to Hampstead:
- The lakeside neighborhoods around Big Island Pond have lake-area characteristics (narrow access roads, sometimes private association roads)
- The newer subdivisions toward Atkinson and Sandown lines have modern construction with standard access
- The Hampstead Public Library area has some of the older housing stock in the town
Sizing in Hampstead:
- Most residential renovations work with a 15 or 20-yard
- Lake-area work sometimes needs smaller for access
- Shed or outbuilding cleanouts often need 20 to 30-yard
Plaistow specifics
Plaistow has its own commercial corridor along Route 125 with retail, restaurants, and small business. The residential side stretches from the older sections near downtown to newer subdivisions toward Atkinson, Newton, and the MA line.
A few things specific to Plaistow:
- Route 125 traffic is heavy, especially during MA commuter hours. Weekday mornings are easier for deliveries.
- Residential streets off Route 125 are typical suburban; standard access patterns.
- The older sections near the Plaistow Town Hall have smaller lots with sometimes narrower driveways.
Sizing in Plaistow:
- Standard residential reno: 15 or 20-yard
- Full-house cleanouts in older sections: 20-yard with sometimes a paired truckload
Common project types
Common Hampstead and Plaistow projects:
- Residential renovations (kitchen, bath, deck, finished basement)
- Whole-house cleanouts
- New build debris in active subdivisions on the outer edges
- Shed, deck, and above-ground pool demos
The rural property factor
Both towns have a fair number of properties with detached barns, sheds, workshops, or outbuildings. For outbuilding cleanouts:
- Long driveways, sometimes gravel
- Equipment access varies seasonally (mud season is harder)
- Outbuildings often have decades of accumulated material inside
- A demolition cleanup sometimes pairs with the cleanout for outbuildings past their useful life
For these jobs, a 20 or 30-yard staged near the structure usually works.
What about the lake areas
Big Island Pond, Wash Pond, and the smaller lakes in Hampstead have their own access characteristics:
- Narrow access roads
- Sometimes private (association-controlled) road access
- Seasonal residents with different scheduling needs
- Older cottages mixed with year-round conversions
For lake-area jobs, the 15-yard is often the right pick because of access constraints. Bigger sizes sometimes don't make it down the narrower roads.
Distance from Fremont
Both Hampstead and Plaistow are about 20 minutes from the Fremont yard. We can usually fit a delivery into the schedule fairly quickly.
